Friday Rules: 19/10/2012

Game of the week – String Railway. Every so often, a game is released that brings a smile to your face as soon as you see it. String Railway is one of those games, providing a unique alternative to the usual train-themed boardgames.  Using pieces of string to provide a border for playing, mountains and rivers, you must connect different stations together with strong of your own colour. For 2-5 players and with games lasting only 30 minutes, this is perfect for families, those new to boardgames, or for some light relief between heavier titles. Check out Doug Adam’s review of this little gem on Kulkman’s Gamebox, or Tom Vasel’s video review, and see why this game makes us happy.

Running Away to Join the Circus – love them or hate them, there’s no denying that the circus conjures an enduring image. If you can’t resist the allure of big tops, acrobats and performing animals, two games provide an opportunity to relive the golden age of circus entertainment.  Coney Island is a tile-laying game in which you attempt to lure customers to the famous New York attraction. In Drum Roll, you must hire performers to create the most prestigious travelling circus in 1900s Europe. For those of you that have always found the circus (and lets be honest about it, clowns) a little more sinister, then you may find some solace in Invasion From Outer Space, in which carnival performers fight off martian attack, or the Send in the Clowns expansion for the ever-popular Zombies!!! game.

Just One Wafer-Thin Mint – as those of you who have been in to Rules recently will have noticed, that we’re stuffed (full of great games that is). As Christmas approaches, we’ll be bursting with an ever-wider selection of games to try and meet all your needs. We’re doing everything we can to keep the shop as uncluttered as possible, but apologies if anyone has any difficulty finding things.  We hope you’ll all bear with us for the next few months while we look for bigger and better premises.

Return to Ravnica Games Day – hopefully everyone has recovered from the marathon Return to Ravnica pre-releases at the end of last month, and have their Ravnica-themed decks built. If so, and you’d like to test them out, we have a Return to Ravnica Games Day on Sunday 28th October.

Gaming at the Gate – its just 10 more days until our next gaming evening at the  wonderful Gate in Roath. We’re already planning on what games to bring, and don’t forget you’re welcome to bring your own games. If you’d like to arrange a game of something, don’t forget to let everyone know on Facebook.
